Last Installment of Scoop from Kyra Sedgwick on Her Closer Character Brenda Lee Johnson — or rather, Kyra’s Favorite Outfit on Brenda

In today’s final installment of our series on Kyra Sedgwick’s Closer character Brenda Lee Johnson, Kyra talks lipsticks with TV-Now.

TV-NOW: Tell us about Brenda’s lipstick.
[Note: For the first two seasons, Brenda wore a crazy hot pink lipstick by Laura Mercier called “Hydrangea.” In the third season, she now wears a color called “Ginger Rose” by Revlon and “Sweet Nude” by Lancôme. (Both are worn in the Xmas special.)]

Kyra Sedgwick:
[On the lipstick color “Hydrangea”] “To me, that might be a good color in Atlanta. That’s the color she’s used ever since her prom. Her hair is the same and her lipstick is the same and that’s the way she likes it. The length and style of it is very antique in a way. It’s not of the moment. To me, the pink lipstick was a way of being more a fish out of water. I wanted her to be off. I wanted her clothing to be off, I wanted her hair to be off and I wanted her makeup to be off. No, it doesn’t look right in the sense of what people see on television now in 2000-whatever. They see cops, but certainly not ones wearing that ridiculous shade of lipstick. I actually like that.”
 
TV-NOW: How did you choose the shade?
Kyra Sedgwick: When we were prepping the show, I always knew I wanted her looking different than everyone else. We had eight or ten lipsticks. I told them I wanted pink. It was important to me to have pink. We started with a lot of different pinks and then the makeup artist was like, “And then there’s this one.” I was like, “That’s the one!” I think we tried out about ten. That was the one where she went, or “you could really go, here. Like, you don’t want to do this, do you? I was like, “Yeah!” It was crazy.
 
TV-NOW: Do you like the new shade better?
Kyra Sedgwick “You know I miss that hot pink. It’s Laura Mercier. [I loved it] because I thought it was a bold, courageous choice. [It was] very much, “she just doesn’t go anywhere without that hot pink lipstick.” I thought it was great.”
