  • Aa a child, accompanied his father, actor-director Alan Arkin, to movie sets around the world, taking acting classes at the famed Berghof Studio when he was 10 years old.
  • Made his first film appearance at 13 in 1969's Oscar-nominated short People Soup. His father directed the film; younger brother Matthew costarred.
  • His first screenwriting credit was at age 15 for the Canadian comedy Improper Channels, which he cowrote.
  • First leading role in a TV series was on the short-lived CBS sitcom Busting Loose (1977).
  • In 1981, landed his first leading role in a feature film in the werewolf high-school comedy Full Moon High.
  • Was considered by producer Glenn Caron for the role of David Addison on Moonlighting; the part went to Bruce Willis.
  • Bowed on Broadway in 1991, as Gary Peter Lefkowitz in a Tony-nominated production of I Hate Hamlet; he won the Theatre Award.
  • Had guest stints on several TV shows during the 1980s and '90s before garnering critical acclaim for his portrayal of the reclusive and antagonistic Adam on Northern Exposure (1990-94).
  • Landed seminal role of neurosurgeon Aaron Shutt on Chicago Hope (1994-2000); earned an Emmy nomination in 1997 for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series.
