Alan Bates Fast Facts:
As a child, his musician parents encouraged him to become a concert pianist, until he told them he wished to be an actor instead.
Awarded a scholarship to the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London at age 17, but delayed completing his studies in order to fulfill his mandatory military service.
Made his Broadway debut in 1956 in
Look Back in Anger

Starred in
Women in Love
, an acclaimed version of D.H. Lawrence's novel about two love affairs. The film was highly controversial due to the sexual themes and male frontal nudity.
Served as Patron of the Actors Centre, a London workshop for actors, and set up the Tristan Bates Theatre there in memory of his son.
Received his second Tony award, for
Fortune's Fool
, just a year before his death.
Was knighted in 2003.
