While attending Boston's Grahm Junior College, he starred in his own campus TV show, Uncle Andy's Funhouse.
In 1969, he and his girlfriend Martha Bellu gave up their child for adoption. His daughter, Maria Bellu, discovered the identity of her biological father several years after his death. She was the only child he ever had.
Despite getting his start on Saturday Night Live in the late-'70s, he was later banned from the show as the result of a viewer phone-in poll.
Rocketed to fame as beloved mechanic Latka Gravas on the classic sitcom Taxi (1978-83).
At the end of a sold-out 1979 Carnegie Hall performance, he invited the entire audience to load onto buses and join him for a midnight snack of milk and cookies.
Offered $1,000 to any woman who could pin him in a wrestling match and took on over 400 female challengers without ever being defeated.
Publicly feuded with Jerry "The King" Lawler after the professional wrestler challenged him to a match. Years after Kaufman's death, Lawler revealed that it was all an elaborate hoax.
Although he never smoked cigarettes, he died of lung cancer at age 35. At the time, many thought that his death was just another stunt.
Was the subject of the 1992 R.E.M. song "Man on the Moon" and was portrayed by Jim Carrey in the 1999 biopic of the same name.
