Born in Canada but moved to her mother's native New Zealand when she was 4; holds dual citizenship.
Has no formal acting training.
Was the second-youngest person to win an Oscar when she took home a statuette for her work in The Piano (1993) at age 11. (Tatum O'Neal was the youngest, at 10, for 1973's Paper Moon).
