Met Paul Simon in an elementary school production of Alice in Wonderland.
Began making records with Simon in 1957 as Tom and Jerry, and enjoyed a minor hit with their song "Hey Schoolgirl."
Parted ways with Simon after the album Wednesday Morning, 3 AM (1964), initially flopped; a year later, electric guitar, bass and drums were added to "The Sounds of Silence," and the song went on to become a No. 1 hit.
Made his big-screen debut in 1970, playing Captain Nately in Mike Nichols' adaptation of the novel Catch-22.
Separated from Simon in 1970, but subsequently reunited several times, including the 1981 Concert in Central Park and tours in the 2000s.
First solo release came in 1973 with Angel Clare, which featured a hit cover of Jimmy Webb's "All I Know."
Released a book of poetry, Still Water, in 1989.
Walked across America, in multiple installments, over a period of more than a decade.
