  • Attended school and took ballet lessons in the Nazi-occupied town of Arnhem, Holland.
  • Went to London on a ballet scholarship as a teenager but continued health problems suffered during the war squashed hopes of becoming a prima ballerina.
  • Played the lead in the 1951 Broadway adaptation of Gigi. French novelist Colette, whose short story was the source material for the play, personally recommended her for the role.
  • Fluent in English, French, Spanish, Italian and Dutch.
  • In 1964, reunited with the father who had abandoned her family nearly 25 years earlier at the beginning of World War II.
  • Became close friends with French fashion designer Hubert de Givenchy on the set of Sabrina and donned his original apparel throughout her life.
  • One of a small group to have won an Oscar, Emmy, Grammy, and Tony Award.
  • Lip-synched the songs in the movie musical My Fair Lady infamously recorded by "Voice of Hollywood" Marni Nixon.
  • Served as UNICEF International Goodwill Ambassador from 1988 until her death from colon cancer in 1993.
  • In 1990, a hybrid white tulip was created and named for her in the Netherlands as a tribute to her career and work with UNICEF.
  • Posthumously received the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
  • Her desire to help children continues through the Audrey Hepburn Children's Fund, established by her two sons, Sean and Luca, and longtime companion Robert Wolders in 1994.
