Audrey Hepburn Fast Facts:
Attended school and took ballet lessons in the Nazi-occupied town of Arnhem, Holland.
Went to London on a ballet scholarship as a teenager but continued health problems suffered during the war squashed hopes of becoming a prima ballerina.
Played the lead in the 1951 Broadway adaptation of
Gigi
. French novelist Colette, whose short story was the source material for the play, personally recommended her for the role.
Fluent in English, French, Spanish, Italian and Dutch.
In 1964, reunited with the father who had abandoned her family nearly 25 years earlier at the beginning of World War II.
Became close friends with French fashion designer Hubert de Givenchy on the set of
Sabrina
and donned his original apparel throughout her life.
One of a small group to have won an Oscar, Emmy, Grammy, and Tony Award.
Lip-synched the songs in the movie musical
My Fair Lady
infamously recorded by "Voice of Hollywood" Marni Nixon.
Served as UNICEF International Goodwill Ambassador from 1988 until her death from colon cancer in 1993.
In 1990, a hybrid white tulip was created and named for her in the Netherlands as a tribute to her career and work with UNICEF.
Posthumously received the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
Her desire to help children continues through the Audrey Hepburn Children's Fund, established by her two sons, Sean and Luca, and longtime companion Robert Wolders in 1994.
Honored with a commemorative stamp by the U.S. Postal Service in 2003.
