Bill Cosby Fast Facts:
A passionate believer in higher education, he gave each of his children names that began with the letter "E" standing for "excellence."
Early in his career, he was one of the most influential stand-up comedians of all time; his 1986 concert at Radio City Music Hall broke the venue's attendance record.
Authored many books, including the two bestsellers:
Fatherhood
(1986) and
Time Flies
(1988).
The Cosby Show
was TV's biggest hit in the '80s (it was No. 1 from 1985-89) and almost single-handedly revived the sitcom genre.
Received the Kennedy Center Honors Lifetime Achievement Award in 1998 and was inducted into the Television Arts & Sciences Hall of Fame in 1992.
Became part owner of the NBA's New Jersey Nets in 1999.
Received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2002.
