Blake Edwards Fast Facts:
  • Studio backlots became his playground after his mother married Hollywood production manager Jack McEdwards. His step-grandfather was J. Gordon Edwards, a director in the silent screen era.
  • Served in the Coast Guard during World War II.
  • Created the Emmy-nominated detective series Peter Gunn (1958-1961).
  • Though mostly known for comedies, he directed the alcohol-addicted couple drama Days of Wine and Roses, which motivated Edwards and the film's star Jack Lemmon to begin alcohol recovery programs.
  • Composer Henry Mancini wrote memorable theme songs for Edwards' films, including "Moon River" from Breakfast at Tiffany's, "Days of Wine and Roses," and the instrumental themes for Peter Gunn and The Pink Panther.
  • The set of The Pink Panther was tension-filled for Edwards and star Peter Sellers, who vowed never to work together again. The made up and rejoined for The Party and four more Pink Panther films.
  • Adapted and directed his musical-comedy Victor/Victoria for Broadway. Wife Julie Andrews starred in both versions.
