Spent 10 years in the U.S. Navy, getting out in 1945 with the rank of Gunner's Mate 1st Class.
Made his Broadway debut in 1949 playing a male nurse in Harvey.
Made his feature film debut in 1951's China Corsair.
When Hollywood Squares debuted in 1966, he was the first center square.
In ex-wife Ethel Merman's 1978 autobiography, she devoted one blank page to their marriage, which lasted 32 days, athough it was a year before they were officially divorced.
Is the only actor to have roles in all four Dirty Dozen films.
