Worked as a freelance journalist before turning to acting.
While doing a story on the Brave New Workshop Theatre for the Associated Press, he auditioned for a part, joined the company and remained a member for two years.
Made his TV acting debut in 1979's Undercover with the KKK; movie debut was in the Clint Eastwood film Escape from Alcatraz (1979).
Had a recurring role on L.A. Law as a college professor accused of murder.
Real-life wife, Vonetta McGee, played his character's spouse on L.A. Law. The two also worked together in the TV-movies Brother Future (1991) and Cagney & Lacey: The Return (1994) and the feature film To Sleep with Anger (1990).
