Among Britain's greatest film directors, and one of the first to be awarded a knighthood, in 1953.
First great directorial achievement was The Stars Look Down (1939), a tale of Welsh coal miners; cemented his reputation with Odd Man Out (1947), starring James Mason as an IRA operative.
During World War II, made propaganda films for the British army, including 1944's The Way Ahead, written by acclaimed thriller novelist Eric Ambler and actor and director Peter Ustinov.
Masterwork is the classic Cold War spy thriller The Third Man (1949), based on a book by Graham Greene and starring Orson Welles.
Final important film was the 1968 Oscar-winning musical Oliver!, which featured his nephew Oliver Reed as Bill Sikes.
