  • Among Britain's greatest film directors, and one of the first to be awarded a knighthood, in 1953.
  • First great directorial achievement was The Stars Look Down (1939), a tale of Welsh coal miners; cemented his reputation with Odd Man Out (1947), starring James Mason as an IRA operative.
  • During World War II, made propaganda films for the British army, including 1944's The Way Ahead, written by acclaimed thriller novelist Eric Ambler and actor and director Peter Ustinov.
  • Masterwork is the classic Cold War spy thriller The Third Man (1949), based on a book by Graham Greene and starring Orson Welles.
  • Final important film was the 1968 Oscar-winning musical Oliver!, which featured his nephew Oliver Reed as Bill Sikes.
