Chris Cooper Fast Facts:

Joined the Coast Guard Reserve after high school.
While enrolled at the University of Missouri, he took ballet classes at nearby Stephens College for women, which he said helped him overcome his extreme shyness.
Majored in both agriculture and acting in college.
Played a miner in 1987's Matewan and 1999's October Sky.
Has done some of his finest work under the direction of John Sayles, including Matewan, City of Hope (1991), Lone Star (1996) and Silver City (2004).
Received the Cowboy Hall of Fame's Best Actor Award in 1991 for his performance in Thousand Pieces of Gold.
