  • Made his directorial debut with the 1975 sci-fi/horror hybrid Shivers.
  • Declined invitations to helm several mainstream movies that went on to become big hits, including Flashdance (1983), Beverly Hills Cop (1984) and Top Gun (1986).
  • Biggest box-office success was the 1986 sci-fi remake The Fly, which grossed over $37 million in the U.S. and won an Oscar for Best Makeup.
  • Although he has never even been nominated for an Oscar or a Golden Globe, he has won several Genie Awards — the equivalent of an Academy Award in his native Canada — for Best Achievement in Direction for: Videodrome (1983), Dead Ringers (1988), Naked Lunch (1991), Crash (1996) and Spider (2002).
