Did a tour of duty in Vietnam.
Worked briefly as a Chicago postman.
Joined the Organic Theatre Company in 1972 with Joe Mantegna.
Cast in 1977's A Wedding by Robert Altman, who encouraged him to pursue an acting career in Los Angeles.
His first character on Hill Street Blues was killed off so he could join another Steven Bochco series, Bay City Blues.
As of 2006, he has played a cop 28 times in his career.
Wore a wig and zombie make-up as "Earl" in the Dixie Chicks' 1999 video "Goodbye Earl."
