Parents named him after silent star Dustin Farnum.
Initially aspired to become a concert pianist and attended the Los Angeles Conservatory of Music. When he switched to acting, he studied under method acting guru Lee Strasberg.
Roomed with Gene Hackman and Robert Duvall before becoming a star.
Won a 1966 Obie for The Journey of the Fifth Horse.
Made his film debut in 1967's The Tiger Makes Out; The Graduate was his second film.
Separated from his first wife, dancer Anne Byrne, during the filming of 1979's Kramer vs. Kramer.
Received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Film Institute in 1991.
