  • Started out in showbiz as a production assistant for Entertainment Tonight.
  • Made his film acting, directing, writing and producing debut with the 1995 indie drama The Brothers McMullen, which won an Independent Spirit Award for Best First Feature.
  • Shared in a SAG nomination for Outstanding Performance by a Cast for 1998's Saving Private Ryan, the first film he appeared in that he did not also write and direct.
  • Formed Irish Twin Productions with his screenwriting brother Brian Burns.
  • Was awarded an honorary degree from Hunter College in 2002. He had majored in film studies at the institution but left a few credits short of graduating.
