Adopted the original surname of father Martin Sheen in an effort to establish success on his own merits and not by bloodline.
Childhood friends included Rob and Chad Lowe, plus Sean and Chris Penn.
At age 8, submitted a script to Rod Serling's 1970-73 TV series, Night Gallery. The script was rejected, however.
Honed filmmaking talents as a youth by manning his family's portable movie camera and creating short films.
Had a cameo as a messenger boy in the 1979 film Apocalypse Now, which starred his father. The scene was ultimately cut from the movie.
Penned a high-school play titled Echoes of an Era, about a Vietnam veteran.
In the 1980s, was a member of Hollywood's Brat Pack, a collection of young-gun stars that included Rob Lowe, Andrew McCarthy and Demi Moore.
Starred in the definitive Brat Pack films The Breakfast Club (1985) and St. Elmo's Fire (1985).
Cited as the youngest star to direct, write and have top billing in a movie when he filmed Wisdom (1986) at age 23.
