  • Fought in the Korean War and won two Purple Hearts.
  • First acting job was a non-speaking role in a Broadway production of The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial, starring Henry Fonda.
  • Won a Clio Award for the popular Polaroid TV commercials he appeared in with Mariette Hartley in the late '70s.
  • Maverick and The Rockford Files, his two best-known series, both ended in lawsuits, each of which Garner won.
  • "It took me three or four years to decide if I liked acting," he told TVGuide.com in 2002. "I gave myself until I was 30 to see if I could make a living out of it. [By then], I had starred in a TV series and a couple of movies. I said, 'I could go another five years.' And by the time I was 50, I found myself with a career!"
