  • Won an art scholarship to the University of Minnesota, but dropped out to travel with Spanish photographer Paco Grande, whom she later married and divorced.
  • Studied mime in Paris with Marcel Marceau's teacher, Etienne Decroux.
  • Initially worked as a model for the Wilhelmina Agency before making her film debut as the female lead in the notorious 1976 remake of King Kong.
  • Former boyfriend — director, writer and choreographer Bob Fosse — cast her as the Angel of Death in his 1979 semi-autobiographical film All That Jazz.
  • Breakthrough role was in the 1981 remake of The Postman Always Rings Twice.
  • In 1982, she became the first actress in over four decades to be nominated for both Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress Oscars in the same year.
  • Made Broadway debut in a 1992 revival of Tennessee Williams' A Streetcar Named Desire, playing Blanche DuBois. She returned to Broadway in 2005 as Amanda Wingfield in a revival of Williams' The Glass Menagerie.
