Met Paul Newman while both were in the 1953 Broadway production of William Inge's Pultizer-winning drama Picnic (Woodward was an understudy). Has appeared with Newman in 10 films (beginning with 1958's The Long Hot Summer) and a TV miniseries as well as four films that Newman directed (including 1968's Rachel, Rachel, for which she received an Oscar nomination).
Was the first performer honored with a star on Hollywood's Walk of Fame (1960).
Took the starring role in 1963's The Stripper, which was intended for Marilyn Monroe, after Monroe died.
Enrolled at Sarah Lawrence College in 1981, 32 years after dropping out of LSU; became a trustee in 1986, received her B.A. in 1990 (Paul Newman delivered the commencement address), and in 1991 the Newman Foundation endowed the college's Joanne Woodward Chair of Public Policy.
Was artistic director of the Westport (CT) Country Playhouse from 2000 to 2005.
