At age 7, he saw Laurence Olivier in Richard III, which inspired him to become an actor; 39 years later, he played Olivier in the 2005 BBC TV-movie Kenneth Tynan: In Praise of Hardcore.
Founded a theater company that performed in British schools and youth clubs.
His television debut was A Married Man on England's Channel Four; his movie debut was Privates on Parade.
His breakout role (in more ways than one) was 1986's A Room with a View, in which he had a full-frontal nude scene. Following the success of that film, he moved to America and initially stayed with pal John Malkovich.
