  • Lived with Henry Fonda in New York and Hollywood while they were struggling actors in the early '30s; the two remained lifelong friends despite their political differences.
  • Made film acting debut in The Murder Man (1934).
  • In the 1930s and 1940s, he was romantically linked to a bevy of leading ladies, including Norma Shearer, Ginger Rogers, Marlene Dietrich and Olivia de Havilland.
  • During World War II, he flew 20 missions over Germany as a combat pilot and rose from the rank of Private to Colonel. Received the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Air Medal, and France's Croix de Guerre. 
  • After the war, the first film he made was the classic It's a Wonderful Life (1946).
  • Was the first star to take a small up-front salary in exchange for a percentage of a film's profits (for Winchester 73) in 1950.
  • Honored with a Life Achievement Award from the American Film Institute in 1980.
