  • Signed with MGM in 1935 (for $100 a week); sang "Zing Went the Strings of My Heart" at her audition.
  • Awarded an honorary 1939 Oscar for her performance in The Wizard of Oz. In 1952, she received a special Tony Award for her concert engagement at Broadway's Palace Theater.
  • Suffered her first nervous breakdown on the set of the MGM musical The Pirate in April 1947. (The film was directed by her second husband, Vincente Minnelli.)
  • A Star Is Born, the 1954 musical drama that earned her a Best Actress Oscar nomination, was produced by her third husband, Sid Luft.
  • Her final performance took place a week before her death (from an accidental overdose of barbiturates in her London flat on June 22, 1969) at the Half Note in New York's Greenwich Village.
  • In 2001, "Over the Rainbow," which she introduced in the classic 1939 film The Wizard of Oz, was named the Greatest Song of the 20th Century in a poll commissioned by the National Endowment for the Arts and the Recording Industry Association of America.
