Signed with MGM in 1935 (for $100 a week); sang "Zing Went the Strings of My Heart" at her audition.
Awarded an honorary 1939 Oscar for her performance in The Wizard of Oz. In 1952, she received a special Tony Award for her concert engagement at Broadway's Palace Theater.
Suffered her first nervous breakdown on the set of the MGM musical The Pirate in April 1947. (The film was directed by her second husband, Vincente Minnelli.)
A Star Is Born, the 1954 musical drama that earned her a Best Actress Oscar nomination, was produced by her third husband, Sid Luft.
Her final performance took place a week before her death (from an accidental overdose of barbiturates in her London flat on June 22, 1969) at the Half Note in New York's Greenwich Village.
In 2001, "Over the Rainbow," which she introduced in the classic 1939 film The Wizard of Oz, was named the Greatest Song of the 20th Century in a poll commissioned by the National Endowment for the Arts and the Recording Industry Association of America.
