Lost his New Jersey accent as a teenager by repeatedly listening to recordings of British thespian Sir John Gielgud.
Prior to finding work as an actor, he sang folk songs in coffee shops.
Won Tony Awards for his performances in Seascape (1975) and Fortune's Fool (2002); was also nominated for his turns in Dracula (1978) and Match (2004).
Replaced Hugh Laurie as Daily Planet editor Perry White in 2006's Superman Returns.
