Angela Lansbury Fast Facts:
  • Left her native England with her mother and two brothers in 1940 on the last boat to America following the London Blitz; became a U.S. citizen in 1951.
  • Her role in the film The Manchurian Candidate (1962) was originally intended for Lucille Ball. Later, Ball bought the rights to and starred in the movie musical Mame, the show that had won Lansbury her first Tony Award.
  • Was only three years older than Laurence Harvey, who played her son in The Manchurian Candidate.
  • Declined the role of Nurse Ratched in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (1975), for which Louise Fletcher won an Oscar.
  • Although she received an Emmy nomination for her performance as Jessica Fletcher in Murder, She Wrote for each of the 12 seasons the detective drama aired, she never won.
  • Among honors received: induction into the Theatre Hall of Fame (1982) and the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences Hall of Fame (1996); recipient of the National Medal of Arts (1997) and the Kennedy Center Honors (2000).
