Charles Laughton Fast Facts:
Served in the British Army during World War I.
Worked in the family business as a hotel manager before turning to acting.
Juggled stage and screen work throughout his career, collaborating on Bertolt Brecht plays in the late 1940s and, in the next decade, acting on-stage in New York and Stratford-upon-Avon while also making films.
His single foray into film directing was an impressive one: the critically acclaimed
The
Night of the Hunter
(1955).
His wife, Elsa Lanchester, appeared with him in a number of films, playing Anne of Cleves to his Oscar-winning monarch in
The Private Life of Henry VIII
(1933) and earning her own Academy Award nomination for her supporting role in
Witness for the Prosecution
(1957).
