David Lean Fast Facts:

Began his film career as an editor, becoming quite accomplished in the field and going on to personally edit all of the films he directed.
Directed three motion-picture adaptations of Noel Coward plays (1944's Happy Breed, 1945's Blithe Spirit and Brief Encounter) after the playwright co-directed Lean's directorial debut, 1943's In Which We Serve.
Known for his epic works such as The Bridge on the River Kwai (1957), Lawrence of Arabia (1962), and Doctor Zhivago (1965).
Final film was the Oscar-nominated A Passage to India (1984), released after an almost 15-year sabbatical prompted by the unfavorable reviews of his multimillion-dollar Ryan's Daughter (1970).
Was awarded a knighthood in 1984, and won an American Film Institute Lifetime Achievement Award in 1990.
