  • Father Ingvard, a Danish immigrant, served with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.
  • Was an aerial gunner for the Royal Canadian Air Force during World War II.
  • Early big-screen roles were primarily dramatic in nature, including 1956 thriller Ransom! (remade in 1996 by Ron Howard) and sci-fi classic Forbidden Planet (1956).
  • Moved into comedy---and experienced a career revival---with David Zucker's classic spoof Airplane! (1980); this was later followed by the hit Naked Gun trilogy, which extended Nielsen's popularity into the '90s.
  • Released his first book, a parody of Hollywood autobiographies titled Leslie Nielsen: The Naked Truth, in 1993.
  • Brother Erik is a former Canadian deputy prime minister.
