  • Worked as a bartender in a number of Broadway theaters.
  • Played the bartender Sacha in a forgettable 1983 TV-movie version of Casablanca that also featured David Soul in the Bogart role, as well as Hector Elizondo and Scatman Crothers.
  • Although he had the pivotal role of the ghost of "Shoeless" Joe Jackson in 1989's Field of Dreams, he said that he found the film's success baffling because its premise was so outlandish.
  • While researching his role as a VA doctor in 1992's Article 99, he shadowed the chief surgeon at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and passed out during a procedure, chipping two teeth and requiring 15 stitches in his chin.
