Lucille Ball Biography

lucille ball
  • Birth Name: Lucille Desiree Ball
  • Birth Place: Celoron, NY
  • Date of Birth / Zodiac Sign: 08/06/1911, Leo
  • Date of Death: 04/26/1989
  • Profession: Actor; dancer; producer; model; studio executive
Lucille Ball Fast Facts:
  • Was one of the original "Goldwyn Girls" along with Betty Grable and Paulette Goddard.
  • Shaved her eyebrows for her role as a slave girl in 1933's Roman Scandals. They never grew back.
  • In 1953, she and her newborn son, Desi Arnaz Jr., appeared on the first cover of TV GUIDE magazine; 50 years later, the magazine dubbed her TV's Greatest Star (Johnny Carson was second).
  • During the six-year run of I Love Lucy, the series never ranked lower than third; it was the first show to be filmed before an audience, and Ball and husband Desi Arnaz pioneered the three-camera production technique that is now standard for sitcoms.
  • Believed the letters A and R brought good luck, which is why her TV characters were named Lucy RicARdo (I Love Lucy), Lucy CARmichael (The Lucy Show), Lucy CARter in (Here's Lucy), and Lucy BARker (Life with Lucy). Her first husband was Desi ARnaz, second was GARy Morton.
  • A few years after her death in 1989, the manuscript to her long-lost autobiography was found in a filing cabinet. Love, Lucy, which covered her life into the '60s, was published in 1996.
