Marcello Mastroianni Fast Facts:

Was captured by the Nazis during World War II, but managed to escape from a German labor camp and remain in hiding until the war was over.
Handled bookkeeping for a film company in Rome, before joining a local theater group and gaining the attention of director Luchino Visconti.
Made his big-screen debut in a 1947 Italian version of Victor Hugo's Les Miserables.
Gained international attention for his performance in Federico Fellini's landmark La Dolce Vita (1960).
Costarred in numerous films with Sophia Loren, including Too Bad She's Bad (1955), Marriage Italian Style (1964) and Robert Altman's Ready to Wear (1994), the actors' final pairing.
Following his death, in tribute to a scene from La Dolce Vita, Rome's Trevi Fountain was turned off and draped in black crepe.
