Mare Winningham Fast Facts:
  • Forayed onto the stage with the Teenage Drama Workshop at California State University when she was 12 years old.
  • Performed with the Los Angeles Free Shakespeare Company for two years, while still attending high school. 
  • First TV gig was playing the guitar while performing a Beatles tune on The Gong Show in 1976. 
  • Played lead role of Maria in her senior-class production of The Sound of Music, opposite Kevin Spacey's Captain Von Trapp; her performance was viewed by Hollywood talent agent Meyer Mishkin, who was so impressed that he signed her as a client.
  • Landed first feature-film role in the 1980 drama One Trick Pony, which led to a substantial part in 1981's Threshold, in which she played the first recipient of an artificial heart.
  • Displayed her singing chops in the 1981 made-for-TV flick Freedom.
  • Returned to films after a four year hiatus to join the Brat Pack for the 1985 classic St. Elmo's Fire.
  • Learned American Sign Language for her role as Maggie, the daughter of deaf parents eager to make a life of her own in the much acclaimed NBC movie Love Is Never Silent (1985).
  • In 1992, released first album of folk songs entitled What Might Be; released 1998's Lonesomers and Refuge Rock Sublime (2007), which focuses on her conversion to Judaism. . 
  • Converted to Judaism in 2003, after taking a class given by Rabbi Neal Weinberg at the University of Judaism in Los Angeles, CA, in November 2001.
  • Made acclaimed appearances on several high-profile shows, such as ER, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit,  David E. Kelley's short-lived series The Brotherhood of Poland, New Hampshire, Grey's Anatomy and, most recently, Boston Legal.
