Mike Nichols Fast Facts:
  • Father was a Russian doctor who left for Germany after the Russian Revolution; mother was German-born, the daughter of Jewish intellectuals.
  • At age 4, had an allergic reaction to a whooping cough vaccination, leaving his body permanently hairless; since then, he's worn wigs. 
  • Fled Germany in 1939 with his younger brother; his father had left for the United States the previous year and his mother was too ill to travel.
  • Attended the Dalton School in New York with actor Buck Henry. 
  • Studied with acting guru Lee Strasberg in New York City.
  • In 1955, with, among others, Elaine May, Barbara Harris and Alan Arkin, formed the Compass Players, an improvisational comedy troupe that would later evolve into Second City.
  • Was standing behind Marilyn Monroe in 1962 when she sang "Happy Birthday" to President John F. Kennedy.
  • Directed the original Broadway versions of Neil Simon's Barefoot in the Park, The Odd Couple, Plaza Suite, The Prisoner of Second Avenue and Fools.
  • One of the few people to have won an Oscar, Tony, Emmy and Grammy.
