  • Entered the pre-med program at Memphis State University but discovered a passion for theater and transferred to the arts program.
  • After college, took a job as a law-firm secretary while searching for acting auditions.
  • Made onscreen debut in the 1979 movie version of Hair, and worked again with its director Milos Forman in the film Ragtime (1981).
  • Earned accolades for his Tony Award-winning performance in the 1989 Broadway musical Grand Hotel.
  • Familiar to television viewers as the math teacher and assistant football coach Herman Stiles on the popular sitcom Evening Shade starring Burt Reynolds, which earned him an Emmy Award.
  • Beloved by children as the "other" Mr. Noodle on the Elmo's World portion of Sesame Street. The "first" Mr. Noodle and Ms. Noodle are portrayed by fellow Broadway vets Bill Irwin and Kristin Chenoweth, respectively.
  • Diagnosed as HIV-positive in the early 1990s and first spoke openly about it on the television newsmagazine Entertainment Tonight in 1997.
