Paul Newman Fast Facts:
  • Served in the Navy during World War II and wanted to be a pilot, but couldn't due to being color-blind.
  • Made his Broadway debut in 1953 in Picnic.
  • Was so embarrassed by his big-screen debut in 1954's The Silver Chalice that he took out an ad in Variety to apologize for the performance.
  • His roles of boxer Rocky Graziano in Somebody Up There Likes Me (1956) and Billy the Kid in The Left Handed Gun (1958) were originally to be played by James Dean. Newman took over the roles after Dean's death.
  • Received an honorary Oscar in 1985 and a Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award in 1993. Was nominated six times for the Best Actor Oscar before winning for The Color of Money (1986).
  • Has a line of food products, Newman's Own, and donates all the proceeds to charity.
