  • Practiced walking around blindfolded to prepare for her Oscar-winning performance as Helen Keller in 1962's The Miracle Worker.
  • Delivered one of the most incoherent acceptance speeches in Emmy history when she received an award for her role in My Sweet Charlie (1970). She later wrote: "Accepting the Emmy . . . turned into a nationally televised nightmare."
  • Became the second woman elected president of the Screen Actors Guild in 1985.
  • Published frank autobiography entitled Call Me Anna in 1987 and has been a spokesperson for mental health ever since.
