Earned a varsity letter in rowing at the University of California.
Worked as a thrill-ride barker at the World's Fair and as a tour guide at Rockefeller Center prior to landing acting jobs in New York.
A back injury suffered during a dance class at New York's Neighborhood Playhouse made him ineligible for military service during WWII.
Along with with Mel Ferrer and Dorothy Malone, he cofounded the La Jolla Playhouse in his hometown in 1947.
