Joined the Los Angeles-based improv troupe the Groundlings in 1975.
Helped Paul Reubens develop his childlike Pee-wee Herman character in the late '70s.
Nicknamed "The Glue" by his Saturday Night Live colleagues because of his ability to hold the show together.
Contributed voices to 49 episodes of The Simpson. Among his characters: has-been actor Troy McClure and shady lawyer Lionel Hutz.
