One of the most beloved singers of all time, country or otherwise, this charismatic star has won a slew of awards and honors for her popular recordings. In the early '90s, she branched out into acting with remarkable success. A supporting role in the delightful B-movie Tremors led to other work, mostly in TV projects. But 2001 proved to be her banner year as an actress. Not only did McEntire win raves and a special Drama Desk Award as the legendary Annie Oakley in a Broadway revival of the musical Annie Get Your Gun, she also launched her eponymous hit sitcom.

  • Worked on the WPRA rodeo circuit for 10 years in quarter-horse barrel racing.
  • Almost didn't make it to her debut at the Grand Ole Opry on September 17, 1977. A guard at the gate didn't see her name on the list and refused to let her in. It took a call from her booking agent to resolve the problem.
  • In 1991 her tour manager and seven members of her band were killed in an airplane crash.
  • Co-founded Starstruck Entertainment with second husband Narvel Blackstock.
  • Received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on September 18, 1998.
  • Served as a spokesperson for the Middle Tennessee United Way, the national 4-H clubs of America and Bob Hope's Hope for a Drug-Free America.
  • As of 2006, hosted the Academy of Country Music Awards more times than any other artist.
