Robert Redford Fast Facts:
  • Traveled to Europe to study art and painting after losing the baseball scholarship on which he was attending the University of Colorado.
  • Appeared on numerous TV series in the early 1960s, including Maverick, Alfred Hitchcock Presents, The Twilight Zone and The Untouchables.
  • Made his big-screen debut in 1962, starring alongside Sydney Pollack and Tom Skeritt in the Korean War drama War Hunt.
  • First appeared on Broadway in 1959's Tall Story.
  • Scored his first major stage hit four years later with Neil Simon's Barefoot in the Park; reprised the role of Paul Bratter in the 1967 big-screen adaptation.
  • Founded the nonprofit Sundance Institute in Park City, UT, in 1980---a venture that has since spawned the Sundance Film Festival and cable TV station the Sundance Channel.
  • Made his directing debut with acclaimed drama Ordinary People (1980), which won Oscars for best picture, writing, directing and supporting actor, and was nominated for several others.
