  • Was a skilled rugby player who aspired to play professionally. He competed for the Crescent School and the prestigious Garryowen Club before contracting tuberculosis at age 19, which effectively ended his athletic dream.
  • Made his feature-film debut in the 1959 comedy Alive and Kicking.
  • Replaced good friend Richard Burton in the big-screen version of Camelot (1967) and eventually took the role back to Broadway in 1981.
  • Published a collection of poems in 1973 titled I, in the membership of my days.
  • Won Best Actor at the Evening Standard Theatre Awards and was nominated for a Laurence Olivier Award for Best Actor for his performance in a 1991 production of Henry IV.
