Alan Rickman Fast Facts:
  • Worked as a graphic designer at radical newspaper the Notting Hill Herald and founded his own London-based design company, Graphiti.
  • Joined the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1985 and originated the part of Le Vicomte de Valmont in a West End production of Les Liaisons Dangereuses. He reprised his role in the show's 1987 Broadway run, earning Tony and Drama Desk nominations.
  • First big-screen role came as the villain in the 1988 action blockbuster Die Hard.
  • Named British Actor of the Year at the 1991 London Film Critics Awards for his varied roles in such films as the drama Close My Eyes, the romantic fantasy Truly Madly Deeply, the Western Quigley Down Under and the action-adventure Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves.
  • Won Best Supporting Actor at the British Academy of Film and Television Awards for Robin Hood, and was nominated for BAFTAs for Best Supporting Actor for 1995's Sense and Sensibility and the 1996 biopic Michael Collins.
