  • Took the last name Rooney from vaudevillian Pat Rooney in 1932.
  • In 1934, the year he signed with MGM, he made 12 films, including Manhattan Melodrama and Blind Date.
  • At 19, he became the first teenager nominated for an Oscar, for 1940's Babes in Arms.
  • Was the No. 1 U.S. box-office star from 1939-41.
