  • Participated in her first beauty pageant at age 14 and won "Princess of the Sea" honors.
  • While filming Boy on a Dolphin, she walked in a trench in order to give the impression that her co-star Alan Ladd was taller than she.
  • Was the first winner of an Oscar given for a non-English language performance for her work in 1960's La Ciociara (Two Women).
  • Had her marriage to Carlo Ponti annulled to save him from facing bigamy charges in Italy, even though they continued living together. They legally remarried in France in 1966.
  • Clashed with Marlon Brando during the filming of a love scene on the set of 1967's A Countess From Hong Kong, when he reportedly made an off-color comment about her nostrils. 
  • Never appeared on stage due to severe stage fright.
