Thomas Haden Church Biography

thomas haden church
  • Birth Name: Thomas Quesada
  • Birth Place: Fort Worth, TX
  • Date of Birth / Zodiac Sign: 06/17/1961, Gemini
  • Profession: Actor; director; screenwriter
Ruggedly handsome and surprisingly versatile, this former deejay has showcased his world-weary demeanor in both comic and dramatic roles. In 1990, he snagged his breakthrough part as a lovable dullard on the sitcom Wings, and during his five-year tenure, the Texas native made his film debut as a gunslinger in the Western Tombstone. Worried about being typecast, he left Wings in 1995 for a completely antithetical (not to mention larger) role as a stuck-up, sarcastic urbanite on Ned and Stacey. Although the series was short-lived, it was quite amusing, and Church was in fine form as a despicable cad who still managed to be appealing. After the sitcom's demise, he bought a ranch in his home state but continued to pop up in supporting parts in bad flicks (Monkeybone, The Specials) and even cowrote, directed and appeared in the 2003 pot comedy Rolling Kansas. Then Church more or less retired from showbiz, opting to stay home and raise cattle. Then writer/director Alexander Payne cast him as an aging, commitment-phobic playboy in the critically acclaimed indie Sideways. Church's seriocomic turn earned him Oscar and Golden Globe nods, and an Independent Spirit Award, and completely revitalized his career. Soon he was working more than ever in high-profile projects, both on the big-screen (Spider-Man 3) and TV, earning a second Golden Globe nomination for his sympathetic performance as a cowboy in the 2006 miniseries Broken Trail.
