Terry Gilliam Fast Facts:

The only non-British member of Monty Python, and created the animation for all of their projects.
While directing the 1985 classic Brazil, he clashed with movie producers and execs over the film's length and tone. When he won Best Director and Best Screenplay (with Tom Stoppard and Charles McKeown) at the 1985 Los Angeles Film Critics Awards, the studio was forced to release the movie more or less as Gilliam had intended.
His 1991 drama The Fisher King was nominated for several Oscars, including Best Screenplay.
Nominated for the Saturn Awards' Best Director three times: the fantasy-comedy 1981 Time Bandits, the 1991 drama The Fisher King and the 1995 sci-fi thriller 12 Monkeys.
Started filming The Man Who Killed Don Quixote in 2001, but never completed the movie; its troubled production became the subject of the 2002 documentary Lost in La Mancha.
In 2004, he was awarded an honorary D.F.A. from Occidental College and an honorary doctorate from the Wimbledon School of Art in London.
After living in England for over four decades, he legally renounced his American citizenship in 2006.
