  • Father ran a candy store near where she was born.
  • Launched career as model and nightclub singer while studying at the Neighborhood Playhouse School of the Theatre (New York, NY) and the Actors Studio (New York, NY).
  • Forayed into acting in the 1952 Bette Davis musical revue Two's Company, which paved the way for roles in a string of other Broadway productions, including John Murray Anderson's Almanac, The Fifth Season and Will Success Spoil Rock Hunter?.
  • Made first TV appearance in January of 1956 on the hour-long dramatic anthology series Studio One.
  • Appeared on Broadway with future Batman star Julie Newmar (who played Catwoman) in 1957's hit musical Li'l Abner as Apassionata Von Climax; released an album of songs that same year, entitled It's Time for Tina, which featured various hits, such as "Embraceable You" and "I'm in the Mood for Love."

  • First Hollywood film role was in the 1958 flick God's Little Acre, which boosted her to leading-lady status to major stars such as Robert Taylor and Richard Widmark. 
  • Studied with Lee Strasberg and became a member of the Actors Studio.
  • Appeared with future Gilligan's Island costar Bob Denver in a 1960s beach flick, For Those Who Think Young.
  • Landed seminal role of movie star Ginger Grant on the popular TV show Gilligan's Island (1964-67) while starring on Broadway in the play Fade Out, Fade In; disassociated herself from the show after it ended, by opting out of participating in the Gilligan cartoon and various TV-movie specials during the 1970s and 1980s. She was replaced by Judith Baldwin.
