Spencer Tracy Fast Facts:
  • Due to his rebellious attitude and his father's nomadic work, Tracy attended 15 grade schools and six high schools.
  • At the urging of his father, he considered going into the priesthood.
  • Dropped out of high school to enlist in the Navy with longtime friend and fellow actor Pat O'Brien.
  • While studying medicine at Wisconsin's Ripon College, he decided to become an actor after starring in several school plays.
  • First major big-screen role came in John Ford's 1930 crime comedy Up the River.
  • First actor to win back-to-back Oscars.
  • After reportedly causing problems on the set, Tracy was fired from Robert Wise's 1956 film Tribute to a Bad Man; it was Tracy's final project with MGM after two decades at the studio.
  • Appeared in nine films with companion Katharine Hepburn. They first co-starred in the 1942 romantic comedy Woman of the Year; they last appeared together in 1967's Guess Who's Coming to Dinner, which was completed 17 days before Tracy's death.
