  • On the night of her birth, Laurence Olivier, who was appearing with her father Michael in a production of Hamlet, announced from the Old Vic Theatre stage, "Tonight, a great actress has been born."
  • Made both her film debut (in the 1958 British medical drama Behind the Mask) and London stage debut (in A Touch of the Sun) playing the daughter of her father's character.
  • Joined the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1960, acting alongside Diana Rigg and Judi Dench.
  • Earned the first of several Oscar nominations for the 1966 dramedy Morgan: A Suitable Case for Treatment; her competition included her sister, Lynn, who was nominated for Georgy Girl.
  • Appeared with her mother, Rachel Kempson, brother Corin and daughters Natasha and Joely in her ex-husband Tony Richardson's 1968 remake of The Charge of the Light Brigade
  • Ran for the British Parliament as a member of the Workers Revolutionary Party in 1974 and '79 and, with Corin, launched Britain's Peace and Progress party in 2004.
  • Won her first Emmy Award for her U.S. TV debut, the 1980 CBS Holocaust drama Playing for Time.
